J.J. Abrams will return to the director’s chair for the final chapter of the latest “Star Wars” trilogy, Lucasfilm announced Tuesday.

Abrams, who co-wrote and directed 2015’s “The Force Awakens,” will also write the still-unsubtitled Episode IX with Chris Terrio.

The filmmaker is stepping in to helm Episode IX after Lucasfilm announced last week that “Jurassic World” director Colin Trevorrow was leaving the project.

The second film in the trilogy, “The Last Jedi,” is directed and written by Rian Johnson and is due in theaters this December.

Episode IX is scheduled for release in 2019.
