Outdoor ice rink lives on at new location
Fairport, N.Y. -- An outdoor ice rink that sat in its founder's backyard for nearly two decades is getting new life at its new location.
Brian Stancampiano opened Deer Bone Arena behind his Fairport home in 1996 when his son was a young hockey player. He offered ice time to whoever was willing to help him take care of it, and estimates he's had more than 1,000 people come to his yard through the years to skate at Deer Bone Arena.
The rink followed the Stancampiano family when they moved to a new home 5 years later and stayed there through the 2016 season.
Last winter, the rink moved to Village Sports in Fairport, with Brian Stancampiano still overseeing the rink even though it's no longer on his property.
Deer Bone has been busy so far this season, thanks to the cold and snow that have made for good ice conditions. Ashley Doerzbacher visited the rink this morning to learn about its history, why it's become well known in the local hockey community and how local hockey players and programs can check it out.
