Rochester, N.Y. (WHAM) - A water main break in Rochester has displaced four people Wednesday afternoon.

According to firefighters on scene, the water shot up five stories in the air when the main broke at the intersection of Brown Street and Toronto Street. The water main is part of a “Holley system”, which is an older type of water main.

The water then cascaded down onto a nearby building where four people were living. All four were displaced.

With the cold temperatures, fire crews on scene were unsure how structurally sound the building is under the weight of the water.

As a result, the Red Cross is helping the people find a place to stay for the night. Utilities are being shut off at the building as a precaution as well.

There is no cause for the break just yet.

Brown Street is closed at State Street as crews work on containing the break.
