Construction begins on Rt. 531-Rt. 36 interchange in Ogden
Ogden/Sweden, N.Y. (WHAM) - Construction has begun this week on the first of two phases to make upgrades to the Rt. 531-Rt. 36 interchange in Ogden.
Work will upgrade the intersection of Route 531 and Route 36, and also modify sections of Route 31. The goal is to ease traffic and make it safer for drivers where Rt. 531 ends at Rt. 36.
Part of the project will build a direct connection from Route 531 to Route 31 just south of existing Route 31, along the eastbound on-ramp to Route 531. Route 531 will connect directly to Route 31 (Brockport-Spencerport Road) and will transition from a four-lane expressway to a two-lane road west of Route 36.
The $14 million project will bring several improvements to the roadways, including widening Rt. 31 from the intersection of Rt. 531 to just east of Gallup Road, adding a median between the east and west lanes on Rt. 531, and turning part of Rt. 31 into a cul-de-sac west of Rt. 36 to give people access to residential homes north of Rt. 31.
The first phase, at the intersection of Rt. 531 and Rt. 36, will excavate the highway and lower the hill. As a result, the Rt. 31 eastbound ramp to Rt. 531 will be closed, along with a section of Rt. 36 between Rt. 531 and Colby St.
This phase will last through the summer.
The second phase will begin next year and will create a two-way left turn lane on Rt. 31 from Gallup Rd. west toward Salmon Creek Road.
The project is expected to be completed by the end of 2018.
