Pittsford holds meeting Thursday evening on canal tree clearing
Pittsford, N.Y. (WHAM) - Tree clearing along the Erie Canal is the focus of a public meeting Thursday night in Pittsford.
Many people living along the canal oppose removing the threes - citing a lack of privacy and decreasing property values.
In contrast, the New York State Canal Corporation said the clearing is due to safety reasons because tree roots could prove to be dangerous.
It is safety that helped to change the mind of a man from Brockport who was originally against the trees being cleared.
"It's a presumed safety, like insurance," Kucmerowski said. "You don't think you're going to get in an accident, you don't cancel your insurance because you think you're going to be clean that day. You have it all the time. When I started to see how they calculated risk, it made very clear sense this is going to hit hard in every village and town."
The meeting Thursday is scheduled for 6 p.m. at the Pittsford-Mendon High School.
