Why do fad New Year's diets never last?

Author and cognitive and brain scientist Susan Peirce Thompson joined us on Good Day Rochester to explain why.

She is the author of "Bright Line Eating: The Science of Living Happy, Thin and Free," which explains what will help you lose weight.

She says the key is to understand how your brain is blocking you from dropping pounds and how to correct it.

Thompson gave the following tips to do so:

  1. Evaluate with your willpower. Instead of maxing out your willpower, go easy on yourself and save your reserves for food choices.
  2. Ditch sugar and flour. Our brains have been hijacked by diets high in sugar and flour to block every attempt at dieting. But the science is clear: sugar actually changes our brains.
