Kids with Boys & Girls Club team up to cook with New York Kitchen
Canandaigua, N.Y. (WHAM) - It has been a hands-on culinary experience this week with the Boys & Girls Club of Rochester.
A group of children teamed up with chefs at the New York Kitchen in Canandaigua, formerly known as New York Wine & Culinary Center.
By the end of the camp this week, the goal is for the kids to have the skills and confidence to prepare a full meal on their own.
On the final day of camp, the kids are put to the test by being handed a basket with mystery ingredients and told to prepare a meal.
"We give them all kinds of ingredients and they make what they can out of it just like on TV the show Chopped," said Matthew Wooster, the lead culinary instructor at New York Kitchen.
Dezmir Phelps, an 18-year-old culinary major at Monroe Community College, is among those attending the camp.
"I like to cook and add my own spices," Phelps said. "It's actually been a pretty fun experience, I like cooking - period."
A lot of the kids, including Phelps, are interested in careers within the food service industry.
