Lawmakers demand answers after personal info found in Monroe Co. DMV dumpsters
Rochester, N.Y. (WHAM) - Monroe County lawmakers are demanding answers after documents with personal information were found in a dumpster outside two DMV offices.
The unshredded documents were found inside dumpsters at the DMV offices in Henrietta and Irondequoit.
On Friday, Monroe County GOP legislators called for the Office of Integrity to investigate, citing the dangers of personal information potentially falling into the wrong hands.
"Our residents have every right to know about the mishandling of personal information and tossing documents that could have exposed hundreds, thousands to potential identity theft," said Brian Marianetti, the Monroe County Legislature majority leader. "The clerk has given no clear answer as to how this ended up as garbage in the first place."
Monroe County Clerk Adam Bello said he is not happy to see this happen.
"What happened here is not acceptable," Bello said. "I'm as angry as everybody else. It is important to take proper care of people's information."
Bello said he is investigating how this happened and said he is taking immediate steps to ensure every document is shredded.
