Man convicted of beating girlfriend to death with crowbar
Rochester, N.Y. (WHAM) - A Rochester man was convicted Friday of beating his girlfriend to death with a crowbar last December.
On Friday, a jury found Elwell McPhail, 50, guilty of second-degree murder in the death of Syreeta Knight.
On December 8, 2017, McPhail beat Knight to death at his Bernard Street apartment using a crowbar while she was sleeping.
Someone out of state called Rochester Police via 311 about the death.
“This case was an absolute tragedy, bringing to light the worst case scenario of domestic violence,” said Assistant District Attorney Perry Duckles. “Last December, Elwell McPhail violently and deliberately took the life of a woman he claimed to love. The Monroe County District Attorney’s Office urges anyone in a domestic violence situation to please reach out to law enforcement or the Willow Domestic Violence Center.”
McPhail will be sentenced July 2 before County Court Judge Douglas Randall.
