Gates, N.Y. (WHAM) - School crossing guards make it their mission every day to help get kids to and from school safely.

On Thursday, 150 crossing guards from across Monroe County were honored with a surprise breakfast at the Italian American Community Center, recognizing their work as unsung heroes. Crossing guards came from Brighton, Brockport, Chili, East Rochester, Greece, Henrietta, Irondequoit, Pittsford, Rochester and Webster to be recognized.

Some of those honored have been crossing guards for decades. Robert Cohen said helping kids now is a lot different from when he started.

"None of that toys that the kids play with," Cohen said. "And stuff like that, you've gotta watch out. You have to watch out for them because they aren't paying attention. So you have to keep an eye out for them. Otherwise the kids are real nice and friendly."

AAA hosted the event, saying everyone there deserves to be honored for all their hard work, whether it be in the wind, rain, snow or sun.
