Penfield tops Fairport in thriller to take Class A lacrosse title, 9-8
For the first time since 2013, the Penfield Patriots can celebrate a Section V boys lacrosse championship.
And also exhale.
Leading 9-5 with about five minutes left, the Patriots watched as Fairport made it 9-6. Then 9-7. Then 9-8.
Then Fairport got the ball back with less than a minute to go, and got another shot off.
But sophomore goalie Travis Wagner made the biggest save of his young career, helping preserve the 9-8 win.
Joey Barboza and Jack Cummings both had big games on offense for the Patriots. Barboza was named to the all-tournament team. Cummings was named the most outstanding player.
